Accessibility

[edit]

I've checked over the table and key for accessibility and generally it seems pretty good. But that's probably because I've just noticed User:Struway2 cleaned it up this morning!

  • I wouldn't insist on a caption as the table comes immediately after a second level heading, which would serve as a navigation anchor for a screen reader anyway.
  • The use of colours in the table only duplicates text information, so that is no problem.
  • I have reservations only about the characters ↑ and ↓ indicating promotion and relegation, and the use of bold to indicate a change of league (same thing, different column). I think I've convinced myself that the bold is not a problem, since the promotion/relegation is obvious from the changed text if navigating down the Division column; while it is obvious because of the ↑ or ↓ when navigating across the corresponding row.

I will drop a note to Graham87 and ask him if ↑ and ↓ are read properly by JAWS. If not, I'll create a template to render an image with alt text as we did with †. --RexxS (talk) 18:20, 23 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

All I did today was to put equals signs in all the row scopes which I'd added some months ago as scope "row" and never noticed the typo until now... Interesting you mention the bolding for change of league: twas me that introduced that years ago because my non-standard colour vision meant I couldn't tell the difference between a couple of the colours that were then generally used in these lists. I had wondered whether the arrows were accessible or not (suspected they might not be) so thanks for checking that. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 18:48, 23 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It turns out that the arrows are not read at all by JAWS (screen reader), so I've created {{}} and {{}} (aliases for {{up-arrow}} and {{down-arrow}}). I've converted the bare symbols to the template like this {{↑|alt=promoted}} and {{↓|alt=relegated}}. They will now speak "promoted" and "relegated" in the appropriate places. --RexxS (talk) 01:32, 26 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
